Portfolio of digital artist Keith Wells About me
I have always had an interest in art and design and used to spend most of my time drawing as a child. As I went through school I realised that art was what I really wanted do as a job, although I wasn't entirely sure in what form. In my first years of school I had ideas of becoming an architect and when asked by a teacher to draw a picture of what we wanted to do for a job when we were older most kids were drawing the usual things you would expect from a 7 year old, fire engines, police cars spaceships, I drew an architect’s drawing table, I still remember getting some weird looks from the other kids to this day.
After school I decided that graphic design was closer to what I wanted to do than architecture and so did a 3 year HND in graphic design, the course wasn't very good and I kind of lost interest towards the end. I then decided unwisely and partly due to the HND being so uninteresting, to not go to university and to look for a job. Over the next few years I had various boring dead end jobs in factories and shops.
It was during this time that I became very interested in making electronic music, I did a part time course in audio engineering and bought myself a small home studio setup which I sequenced using an Atari ST.
Not long after this introduction to computing I also got a PC with an early version of Photoshop, this is what re-sparked my interest for design and is why I am still doing design today. Initially I started off making basic websites and graphics and eventually after being blown away by seeing Toy Story started to get interested in 3D.
After a couple of years or so of working in a shop and feeling like I was an extra in groundhog day I decided that it was time I went back to education and so enrolled at Plymouth University. After 4 years I finally completed my course and left with a BA (Hons) in Digital Media and Design Communication.
During this time it occurred to me what I really wanted to be doing some day, my other interest has always been special effects in films. I have always been more interested in seeing the behind the scenes footage than the actual films themselves and since then have been teaching myself tools like 3D Max, Maya, Zbrush and other visual effects tools used in the film industry.
I also still have a strong interest in web design and I'm always designing different types of UI for sites and teaching myself Flash and other web based applications.
Currently I am freelancing so if you are interested in having any web or design work carried out or would like to offer me a job please contact me via the contact page.
